ISS encourages students to participate in competitive sport. The Physical Education Program provides all students with the basic skills that they can then extend through a sports specific training program. Competition is with other Secondary ( High Schools) Schools in the Suva and Fiji Island community. The timing of the competitions is relative to the local school 3 term year and is sanctioned by the Fiji Ministry of Education.
Athletics: Track and Field.
The Fiji Secondary Schools Track and Field competition season is from February to May. Schools hold internal competitions to select their teams who then go on to compete in their Zone competition. Students who compete in their zone then get to qualify for the National Championships which are held on the Thursday,Friday and Saturday of week 14 of Term 1 of the local schools system.
The National Championships are known as the Coca Cola Games and is one of the biggest Secondary Schools track and Field Meets in the Southern Hemisphere.
Students compete in Grades: Subjunior Grade: 14 years and under on the year of competition.
Junior Grade: 15 or 16 years old on the year of competition
Intermediate: 17 or 18 years old on the year of competition
Seniors: 19 years old and over on the year of competition
Events competed for are:
Track: Sprints: 100 m, 200m, 400m,
Middle Distance: 800m, 1500.
Long Distance: 3,000m.
Field: Shot put, Discus, Javelin
Jumps: Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump.
ISS in Athletics: Progression to the National Championships.
ISS holds an Interhouse Athletics Meet generally Week 5 of Term 1. The top ranked committed students
are selected to represent the school at the zone meet. ISS competes along with 20 other schools in Suva Zone 1.
