At International School Suva (ISS), we cherish our island home and the waters that help to sustain it. As a result, we passionately believe in empowering the next generation to become stewards of the world’s ocean. Our bespoke Ocean Literacy Program (OLP) is designed to immerse students in the wonders of marine science and cultivate an understanding of our impact on the ocean and its vital role in our lives.

Our OLP has been developed to equip our ISS community to excel in ocean literacy, ocean advocacy & ocean competency. We utilise the National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) Ocean Literacy Framework and adapt it to our unique context. The OLP provides opportunities for all students to experience the following:

Our program offers a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on experiences. Students engage in interactive lessons, experiments, and field trips that bring oceanic concepts to life. By exploring coral reefs, mangroves, and marine ecosystems firsthand, students develop a tangible connection to the ocean environment.

We collaborate with marine biologists, oceanographers, and environmentalists who lead workshops and seminars. These experts share their knowledge and passion, inspiring students to explore careers in marine science and environmental advocacy.

Our curriculum is carefully crafted to align with international standards while being tailored to our unique Pacific Island setting. Topics include marine biology, oceanography, climate change, and sustainable practices. Students learn about the latest research and technological advancements in the field.

Students participate in community projects and global initiatives aimed at protecting marine environments. From beach clean-ups to citizen science research projects, our program fosters a sense of responsibility and active participation in ocean conservation efforts.

Students have the opportunity to experience water based activities such as sailing, paddle-boarding, and kayaking. They also have the opportunity to explore more traditional water transport modes such as paddling on the traditional outrigger canoe and in building a bilibil (a traditional raft). Our school boat, the ISS Explorer, allows our students to explore further to study different modes of water transport, the currents & tides, and it also provides an opportunity to be able to snorkel at the coral reefs.

We support student inquiry in using and developing cutting-edge technology to enhance learning e.g. underwater mapping devices, which provide students with a deeper understanding of marine environments and the challenges they face.

At International School Suva, as a beacon of education, our Ocean Literacy Program opens doors to discovery, nurtures a love for the ocean, and empowers students to become proactive guardians of our marine world. Join us in making positive waves for the ocean.
