International School Suva (ISS) has several strands of leadership; the ISS Board, the ISS Senior Leadership Team (SLT), and our Head Student structure.
Board of Trustees
Our Board, much like the seasoned navigators of the Pacific, guides our school with vision and integrity. It is composed of dedicated individuals who volunteer their time and expertise to steer our school, deliberately and strategically, toward a prosperous future. Their diverse backgrounds and perspectives enrich the school’s governance and ensure that we remain true to our mission and vision.
Our community members, parents of students in the school, have the opportunity to vote for a range of candidates during the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The Board members are predominately parent representatives, while two faculty represent the ISS staff. There is the potential to appoint non-community members based on their expertise.
All Board members bring diverse professional experiences and viewpoints to the table, which is particularly useful for long-term strategic planning and decision-making. The Board follows the Articles of Association as set and approved by the community during the AGM.
The Board develops the strategic plan (with input from key stakeholders) and meets monthly to ensure that it is being delivered. There are three subcommittees – Governance, Finance, & Facilities – that also meet monthly to focus on those critical areas.
The Governance Committee plays a pivotal role in steering the direction of our school. This committee provides leadership oversight, ensuring that our mission, vision, and values remain at the heart of our decision-making processes. It works tirelessly to ensure transparent, accountable governance that prioritizes the needs of students, staff, and the wider community. With a focus on ethical standards and long-term sustainability, the Governance Committee sets the course for the school’s continued growth and success.
The Finance Committee serves as the steady anchor that supports our school’s financial health, ensuring resources are used wisely to provide the highest standard of international education. The committee works with foresight and strategic planning to balance present needs with future growth. By overseeing the budgeting process, reviewing financial strategies, and ensuring sustainable financial practices, the Finance Committee keeps the school’s financial foundation strong, allowing us to invest in the resources that fuel the future.
The Facilities Committee ensures that our physical environment reflects our vision to nurture creativity, curiosity, and learning. Our facilities are designed to support the evolving needs of our students. This committee is dedicated to maintaining and enhancing our school’s infrastructure, developing the Facilities Master Plan, ensuring that every space is a safe and inspiring place where learning can flourish. By planning for the future and caring for the present, the Facilities Committee ensures our school’s physical space is a true reflection of our commitment to excellence.

Senior Leadership Team
Thomas van der Wielen, Head of School
The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) is at the helm of ISS and is responsible for the day-to-day and operational running of the school. The SLT comprises The Head of School, Head of Primary, Head of Secondary, and the Business Manager. The team is made up of highly experienced international school educators, committed to delivering the school’s mission and vision.
The Board and the SLT collaborate effectively via Board committees (Facilities, Finance, Governance, & Marketing). The Head of School is appointed by the Board, is the leader of the SLT, and is a non-voting member of the Board.
Head Students
Empowering our students to become future leaders is a cornerstone of our educational philosophy. Our head (and deputy head) student program provides a platform for students to develop their leadership skills, contribute to school governance, and foster a sense of responsibility and service. Elections take place annually and there are representatives at both primary and secondary schools.
