October 29, 2024This year, we are thrilled to introduce the Ocean Learning Center (OLC), a dedicated space at our school designed to enhance our ocean literacy education program. Serving as the base for our Ocean Department team, the center offers a large, covered area ideal for conducting lessons and activities, rain or shine.
The OLC is also home to our comprehensive collection of ocean resources, including kayaks, paddleboards, lifejackets, and snorkeling kits. Both students and teachers come here to collect the items they need for their off-campus ocean competency activities. The center serves as a fitting area where students can try on equipment, such as lifejackets and snorkeling kits, to ensure they are the correct size and fit properly. This setup not only supports our hands-on learning approach but also ensures the safety and preparedness of our students during their ocean adventures.
The OLC features several engaging displays created by our primary students. Their mangrove and coral reef exhibits, made entirely from recycled materials, have been relocated to this area. These displays have become valuable educational tools, helping to raise awareness about marine ecosystems among our student body.
In addition to these exhibits, the center is the new home of the primary school’s Mata Ni Ua Ocean Club, where students gather to learn about and engage with ocean conservation efforts.
A highlight of the OLC is the presence of two fish tanks. These tanks provide students with an up-close and interactive experience with marine life, fostering a deeper connection and understanding of ocean habitats.
The OLC has also served as a venue for various significant events. It hosted the Year 1 Expo, where experts (such as scuba diving instructors and traditional navigation experts) who shared their ocean-related hobbies and professions. Additionally, it was the site of a think tank event, bringing together parents, alumni, and ocean experts to learn about our ocean programme and brainstorm ways to advance it. The center also served as the registration and gathering venue for the Veivueti Ocean Conference, further solidifying its role as a hub for ocean education and advocacy.
We are excited about the opportunities the Ocean Learning Center brings to our school community. This new space not only supports our commitment to ocean literacy but also inspires our students to become stewards of the marine environment.
Looking ahead, the Ocean Learning Center is set to expand, showcasing a variety of marine ecosystems to provide a more comprehensive learning experience. One of the indoor spaces will be transformed into a small teaching area, allowing for more focused educational sessions. This expansion will enable us to offer a broader range of learning opportunities, further enriching our students’ understanding and appreciation of the diverse marine environments.
