September 22, 2025Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness week
Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) Awareness week runs from the 7th to the 14th February each year. This year the Kids4Kids club organised some events at ISS to raise awareness about CHD and raise funds to support the Sai Prema Foundation which built and manages the Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Nasese. We started the week with watching an inspiring and moving video of Avlin’s story of living with CHD and finally receiving a free Gift of Life heart surgery.
Each day classes were sent some facts about CHD which culminated in a quiz at the end of the week. The students became excited and interested in supporting other children suffering from CHD. During lunchtime, the tantalizing smell of freshly roasted popcorn filled the air as students lined up to buy a bag or two! Ice blocks were sold on a separate day and CHD Awareness pins (badges) were sold by an enthusiastic bunch of students from Kids4Kids and their friends. The Primary office and Business office also got on board and by Friday 14th over a 100 pins were sold! Great teamwork on display for a great cause. Friday was also a non-uniform, wear red and blue day, and students and staff brought in gold coin donations to support the cause. All in all the sense of community spirit and good will was exceptionally high.
The final event was a special opportunity for ISS families to attend a Gift of Life ceremony for children who had recently received a free heart surgery and were now recovered enough to return home. It was a touching moment when ISS students handed over the certificates and gift bags to these children and their families. Anais and Anisa gave heart warming speeches wishing the children all the best as they started a new lease of life with a healed heart.
The proceeds from the events at ISS came to over $1700 which Kids4Kids then rounded to $2000 as a donation to the Sanjeevani Children’s hospital. The hospital relies on donations from the public to be able to provide these life saving surgeries for free.
Many thanks to Ms Sue and the students from Kids4Kids for hosting the events, and to our ISS community for your support. Alone we can achieve only a little, but together we can achieve a lot more.
