May 11, 2025Celebrating the Year of the Snake at International School Suva
At the beginning of the new academic year in 2025, the International School Suva (ISS) joyfully welcomed the Year of the Snake with a vibrant Lunar New Year celebration. This festive event brought together students, staff, and the wider school community in a dynamic display of culture and tradition. The celebration was filled with colorful decorations, exciting performances, and delicious food, creating an unforgettable experience for all.
The school campus came alive with stunning red and gold decorations symbolizing good luck and prosperity. In the morning, students dressed in traditional Chinese costumes warmly welcomed their peers and staff at the school gate. Accompanied by suona and piano music, they brought the first ray of New Year blessings and handed out candies to everyone, spreading festive cheer.
During the morning tea break, the spirit of the celebration was further enhanced by lively performances featuring traditional dances and singing. At lunchtime, students eagerly participated in various traditional activities provided by the Fiji China Cultural Centre and the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific. These activities included calligraphy, pitch-pot, a chopstick skill game, and ring toss, allowing students to showcase their creativity and appreciation for cultural traditions. Each activity highlighted the richness of Lunar New Year customs.
One of the most anticipated parts of the event was the food! Dumplings proved to be the most popular dish among the ISS community. The sharing of festive treats fostered a sense of togetherness and appreciation for global culinary traditions.
At ISS, cultural diversity is celebrated and embraced, making events like this an integral part of school life. The Lunar New Year festivities not only honored the heritage of many students but also provided a meaningful opportunity for cultural exchange and learning. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this celebration so special! May the Year of the Snake bring happiness, success, and prosperity to all. 新年快乐 (Xīnnián Kuàilè – Happy New Year)!
