Celebrating Diwali at ISS: A Week of Learning, Joy, and Environmental Awareness
This year’s Diwali celebration at ISS was a memorable and meaningful experience. Organized by the talented Grade 7 and Grade 4 students, the entire school came together for a beautiful assembly that truly captured the spirit of Diwali. But it didn’t stop there—a whole week was dedicated to learning about the traditions, values, and environmental impact associated with this beloved festival.
The Assembly: A Vibrant Showcase of Culture and Traditions
Our Diwali assembly was the highlight of the week. Grade 7 and Grade 4 students led the assembly, filling the room with the colors, sounds, and stories of Diwali. From traditional dances to songs and short skits, they showcased various aspects of the festival, explaining its rich cultural significance. The performances were a joy to watch and offered a glimpse into how Diwali is celebrated in homes across the world. Through this, students could see how the festival brings families together to celebrate light, love, and new beginnings.
Diwali Lessons: More Than Just a Celebration
Throughout the week, students engaged in lessons and activities designed to deepen their understanding of Diwali. They learned why Diwali is celebrated and explored the stories and values behind it, from honoring good over evil to welcoming prosperity and wisdom into our lives. Lessons highlighted the importance of sharing love and joy with others, a core aspect of the Diwali tradition.
Students also discussed the environmental impact of some Diwali practices, particularly the use of firecrackers. Teachers emphasized that, while fireworks are part of the celebration, they also contribute to air pollution and can be distressing for animals. Through this lesson, students became more mindful of their choices and the importance of celebrating Diwali in ways that respect both the environment and the well-being of all living creatures.
Embracing the True Meaning of Diwali
One of the key takeaways for students was understanding the true essence of Diwali: to spread happiness, peace, and light. Beyond the festivities, Diwali is about giving, sharing, and caring for others. Students reflected on ways they could share joy and kindness with their friends, family, and community, embodying the spirit of Diwali beyond just one week.
This week of learning allowed students to connect deeply with the values behind Diwali and to appreciate how traditions can evolve in ways that support both culture and the environment. We are proud of our Grade 7 and Grade 4 students for their hard work in creating a vibrant and thoughtful assembly, and we look forward to celebrating many more festivals with the same spirit of love, learning, and respect for the world around us.
