November 28, 2024A Journey Through Coastal Habitats and Skill-Building
The Year 6 Applied Learning Camp at Coral Coast Christian Camp was an unforgettable experience that took students beyond the classroom and deep into the heart of their interdisciplinary unit (IDU) on Habitat Preservation. The camp, eagerly anticipated by all the students, focused on exploring three critical coastal habitats—mangrove forests, coral reefs, and intertidal zones—while simultaneously developing essential cooperation and communication skills.
Exploring Coastal Ecosystems
During the camp, students had the opportunity to visit and explore three distinct coastal habitats, each offering unique insights into the natural world and its delicate balance. While walking through the mangroves, students observed the unique adaptations of mangrove trees, such as their aerial roots, which allow them to thrive in brackish water. They also learned about the diverse wildlife that inhabits these areas.
The exploration continued underwater as students dove into the vibrant world of coral reefs, often called the “rainforests of the sea.” Through snorkeling activities, students observed the symbiotic relationships between coral polyps and algae that create the stunning colors and intricate patterns of the reefs. They also learned about the critical balance required to maintain these ecosystems and the significant threats posed by climate change and human activity.
“We were told that coral reefs need to be in the right temperature because the coral is very delicate so the slightest change could kill them.” – Nevaan
The intertidal zone, where students explored the area between high and low tides, was another highlight of the camp. Students examined tide pools filled with creatures like hermit crabs, sea stars, and anemones, gaining insights into how organisms survive in such a challenging habitat.
Building Essential Skills: Cooperation and Communication
Beyond content learning, the camp was designed to help students develop key skills that are integral to the MYP ATL framework, particularly cooperation and communication, both of which are essential for their growth as learners and individuals.
Cooperation
Throughout the camp, students had numerous opportunities to practice cooperation, an essential skill that aligns with the IB Learner Profile attribute of being caring. Whether conducting scientific investigations or participating in team-building exercises, students relied on one another to accomplish their tasks. The importance of working together toward a common goal was a lesson that resonated throughout the camp.
“I think from camp I gained some confidence. I did something new and collaborated with others.” – Jayni
“Day one was amazing but it was chaotic. We went out to the coral reef, “Dave’s Reef”. I was really curious about all the fish and coral, as well as a little bit scared.” – Liliana
“We went to the beach for team-building exercises. I originally didn’t want to participate in, but overall I had fun and was happy when we came back to Suva and home.” – James
Communication
Communication, a vital MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills, was another focus of the camp. Students were encouraged to articulate their observations clearly, share ideas, and listen actively to their peers.
A Lasting Impact
The Year 6 Applied Learning Camp was more than just a field trip—it was an enriching educational experience that connected students with nature and fostered essential skills for their future. By immersing themselves in the study of coastal habitats, students not only gained valuable knowledge but also developed a deep appreciation for the environment and a commitment to preserving it.
As the camp concluded, it was clear that the hands-on experiences had left a lasting impression on the students. Their understanding of the natural world was enhanced, and their skills in cooperation and communication were strengthened. The memories and lessons from this camp will undoubtedly stay with them as they continue their educational journey.
“Without the help of my friends and my teachers who helped me through camp, I wouldn’t be as enthusiastic about learning as I am now.” – Elsie
