International School Suva recently hosted its annual ISS Model United Nations Conference 2025, on the 28th and 29th of April, bringing together passionate student delegates from six local schools: Adi Cakobau School, Suva Grammar School, Jai Narayan College, Yat Sen Secondary School, Natabua High School, and International School Nadi. The event was officially opened by the Honorable Lenora Qereqeretabua, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Fiji and Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, whose inspirational address set the tone for the two days of thoughtful debate and collaboration. It was encouraging to see the enthusiasm of the participating schools and the great interest in the simulation exercise by the students.
Throughout the Conference, delegates in their respective councils of the ECOCOS, SCSHT, General Assembly, Security Council, and the UNCHR engaged in dynamic discussions on pressing global issues, developing diplomatic skills, deepening their understanding of international affairs, and learning the importance of negotiation and cooperation in a divided world. Agendas for debate, ranged from ‘Promoting peace and stability in Israel and Palestine and the impact of non-state actors on Global security, ‘The contribution of artificial intelligence towards global economic and societal growth’ and ‘Measures to reduce transnational human trafficking,’ The ‘Best Delegate Award’ was fought hard for in debates within the councils. This year’s inclusion of ‘Honorary mentions’ [mention of names who also stood out but did not receive an award] at the Awards and Closing ceremony was received positively by participants.
Participating in this simulation exercise of the Model UN empowers young people to become informed, articulate, and empathetic global citizens, equipping them with the confidence and critical thinking skills needed to contribute meaningfully to a more just and peaceful future.
When given the opportunity, involvement in such forums is not only a privilege but a powerful step toward shaping tomorrow’s leaders.
