A Journey of Discovery: Year 11 Explores the Garden Island
June 30, 2026The curtains have closed on another unforgettable International School Suva production, with Shrek Jr. – The Not-So-Fairy-Tale Musical delighting audiences over three spectacular evenings. Filled with laughter, music, colourful costumes, and memorable performances, this year’s production was a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and the extraordinary talent of our students.
Months before the curtain rose, students began an incredible journey of rehearsals, learning choreography, vocal arrangements, character development, and stagecraft. Every rehearsal brought new opportunities to grow—not only as performers but as confident communicators, collaborators, and leaders. From the very first audition to the final standing ovation, students demonstrated dedication, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to delivering a performance they could be proud of.
The magic seen on stage was only possible because of the remarkable teamwork taking place behind the scenes. Directors, choreographers, musical directors, teachers, musicians, technical crew, costume coordinators and volunteers all worked tirelessly to transform the ISS Multi-Purpose Hall into the vibrant world of Duloc. Every costume change, lighting cue, set piece, and musical number reflected countless hours of planning and preparation.
More than just a musical, Shrek Jr. became a powerful learning experience. Students developed confidence by performing in front of large audiences, strengthened their communication skills, embraced teamwork, and discovered the value of perseverance. Whether taking centre stage, performing as part of the ensemble, managing backstage operations, or supporting the technical production, every student played an essential role in bringing the story to life.
Throughout the three performances, families, friends, alumni, and members of the wider community filled the Multi-Purpose Hall, creating an atmosphere of excitement and celebration. The final evening welcomed close to 500 audience members, making it one of the largest audiences for an ISS production in recent years. The enthusiastic support from our community inspired our performers and made each show an unforgettable experience.
A particularly meaningful highlight of production week was welcoming students from Frank Hilton Special School to a special matinee performance. Sharing the joy of live theatre with members of our wider community reflected the inclusive values that are at the heart of International School Suva. Seeing students connect through laughter, music, and storytelling reminded us of the unique ability of the performing arts to bring people together.
Productions such as Shrek Jr. demonstrate that learning extends well beyond the classroom. The performing arts provide authentic opportunities for students to develop creativity, resilience, empathy, leadership, and confidence—qualities that prepare them not only for future studies but for life beyond school. Every rehearsal, challenge, and performance contributes to personal growth and reinforces the importance of collaboration, commitment, and believing in oneself.
This year’s production would not have been possible without the extraordinary dedication of so many people. We extend our sincere thanks to our directors, choreographers, musical directors, teachers, production crew, technical team, and every member of staff who supported the production behind the scenes. Most importantly, we congratulate our incredible students, whose enthusiasm, talent, and determination made Shrek Jr. – The Not-So-Fairy-Tale Musical such an outstanding success.
As the curtain falls on another memorable ISS production, we celebrate far more than a successful performance. We celebrate the friendships formed, the confidence gained, the lessons learned, and the memories that will remain with our students for years to come.
At International School Suva, we believe every student has a story worth telling. This year’s production reminded us that when creativity, courage, and community come together, something truly magical happens.
We can’t wait to see what takes centre stage next year.
