ISS Production 2026: Bringing Shrek Jr. – The Not-So-Fairy-Tale Musical to Life
June 30, 2026At International School Suva, learning extends well beyond the classroom. Through our Applied Learning Programme, students are encouraged to engage with the world around them, develop practical skills, build meaningful relationships, and deepen their understanding of the communities and environments in which they live.
Earlier this year, our Year 11 students embarked on a six-day Applied Learning Camp to Taveuni, Fiji’s breathtaking “Garden Island”. From 15–20 February, students immersed themselves in an unforgettable experience that combined environmental education, cultural understanding, outdoor adventure, sustainability, and community service. The camp challenged students to think critically, work collaboratively, step outside their comfort zones, and experience learning in authentic, real-world settings.
Exploring One of Fiji’s Natural Treasures
Surrounded by lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, pristine coastlines, and vibrant biodiversity, Taveuni provided the perfect outdoor classroom.
One of the camp’s highlights was the spectacular Lavena Coastal Walk, where students trekked along the island’s stunning eastern coastline, taking in dramatic ocean views and learning about the unique ecosystems that make Taveuni one of Fiji’s most environmentally significant islands. Their journey continued by fibre boat to the magnificent Lavena Falls, where students enjoyed swimming beneath the waterfall and experiencing the remarkable beauty of one of Fiji’s hidden natural gems. The adventure encouraged resilience, teamwork, and an appreciation for the importance of conserving Fiji’s natural heritage.
Students also experienced the famous Waitavala Natural Waterslides, one of Taveuni’s most iconic attractions. Beyond the excitement of sliding through naturally formed rock channels, students explored the geological processes that have shaped the island over thousands of years and reflected on the importance of preserving these unique environments for future generations.
The camp also included a visit to the International Dateline (180° Meridian), where students explored the significance of one of the world’s most important geographical reference points. Standing at the point where east meets west provided an engaging opportunity to connect classroom studies in geography, navigation, and global time zones with real-life experience.
Another memorable destination was the magnificent Tavoro Waterfalls within the Bouma National Heritage Park. Surrounded by tropical rainforest, students witnessed the power and beauty of one of Fiji’s most celebrated natural landmarks while discussing the importance of conservation, biodiversity, and protected ecosystems.
Sustainability in Practice
Environmental sustainability formed a key component of the camp’s learning objectives.
During a visit to Yanuyanu PTE Ltd, students gained firsthand insight into sustainable farming practices and environmentally responsible agriculture. They explored organic cultivation methods and learned about crops including avocado, vanilla, coffee, pepper, passionfruit, and bananas. Students also discovered the traditional production process of pure dilo oil and examined the role of composting in maintaining healthy soils and sustainable food systems.
The experience encouraged students to think critically about food security, environmental stewardship, and the role individuals and communities play in creating a more sustainable future.
Building Meaningful Community Connections
One of the most valuable aspects of the camp was the opportunity to engage directly with the people of Taveuni.
Students were warmly welcomed by the staff, students, and wider community of Wairiki Holy Cross College, where they experienced genuine Fijian hospitality and developed meaningful cultural connections. Through shared activities, conversations, and collaborative experiences, students gained a deeper appreciation of the values of respect, generosity, and community that are central to Fijian life.
These interactions provided opportunities for students to develop intercultural understanding, strengthen communication skills, and appreciate different perspectives while building friendships that extended beyond the duration of the camp.
Learning Through Service
Giving back to the community formed an important part of the Year 11 Applied Learning experience.
As part of their Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme, students partnered with Holy Cross College to contribute to meaningful community projects. Working together, they donated stationery supplies to support students’ learning and assisted with the installation of new signage boards around the school campus.
These service activities encouraged students to reflect on the importance of leadership through action, empathy, collaboration, and using their skills to make a positive contribution to others. They also demonstrated that meaningful learning is strengthened when students actively engage with and support the communities around them.
Learning That Lasts a Lifetime
The Year 11 Applied Learning Camp was far more than an educational excursion. It was an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, strengthen friendships, develop independence, and gain a deeper appreciation for Fiji’s extraordinary natural environment and cultural heritage.
Experiences such as these are an integral part of an ISS education. They empower students to become confident learners, compassionate leaders, responsible global citizens, and young people who understand that some of life’s greatest lessons are learned through experience.
As our Year 11 students returned to Suva, they brought home far more than photographs and memories. They returned with new perspectives, stronger connections, practical life skills, and a deeper understanding of the people, places, and environments that make Fiji so unique.
At International School Suva, we believe education should inspire curiosity, encourage service, and prepare students to make a meaningful difference in the world. The Taveuni Applied Learning Camp exemplified all of these values and remains a defining experience in our students’ educational journey.
