Ocean Extension Programme
November 28, 2024Celebrating the Completion of the Year 4 & 5 Ocean Extension Programme
We are thrilled to announce the first successful conclusion of the Year 4 and 5 Ocean Extension Programme at ISS. Over eight weeks, our students have had the extraordinary opportunity to deepen their connection to the ocean through hands-on, ocean-centered learning. This program is designed to foster ocean literacy, environmental stewardship, and skill development in our young learners, providing them with invaluable experiences that go beyond the traditional classroom setting.
The Ocean Extension Programme allows students to explore their interests and passions through a variety of ocean-related activities. Each student selected two activities that they were particularly interested in gaining more insight into, or experience with. From kayaking and advanced snorkeling on vibrant coral reefs to impactful beach clean-ups and ocean-themed photography, these activities were not just educational but also transformative. Students engaged deeply with their chosen activities for four weeks, developing new skills and a deeper appreciation for the ocean’s beauty and complexity.
One student from the advanced snorkeling group reflected on the final reef visit as the most unforgettable experience, spotting marine life like a lionfish—a species he had never heard of before. This direct encounter with marine biodiversity exemplifies the unique learning moments our program strives to create. By providing such first-hand experiences, we empower students to become advocates for ocean conservation and develop a lifelong commitment to environmental protection.
This year, we introduced a new skill progression tracking system that encourages students to build on their competencies as they progress through school. This innovative approach not only helps students master specific skills in their chosen activities but also provides a foundation for them to excel in future ocean-related endeavors. The program’s emphasis on skill-building ensures that students gain confidence, competence, and a sense of accomplishment, which can translate into other areas of their academic and personal lives.
Beyond skill development, the Ocean Extension Programme offers our students the chance to immerse themselves in Fiji’s stunning natural environments, from its beautiful beaches to the rich biodiversity of its mangroves and ocean. This experience is about more than just fun; it’s about fostering a deep, personal connection to the ocean and understanding its importance to our planet. The program aligns with our school’s commitment to the Ocean Literacy framework, particularly focusing on Principle 5, which helps students understand marine ecosystems, and Principle 6, which emphasizes our connection to the ocean.
Moreover, the program aligns with UN SDG 14 – Life Below Water, underlining our school’s dedication to sustainable development and environmental education. By embedding these global goals into our curriculum, we aim to equip our ISS community with the knowledge and skills to excel in ocean literacy, advocacy, and competency.
The Year 4 and 5 Ocean Extension Programme is a testament to our belief in experiential learning. It offers our students an incredible opportunity to step out of the classroom and into the real world, fostering a love for the ocean and a drive to protect it.
