Levuka Calling! ISS Y9 Applied Learning Camp – Adventure, History, and Heart in Fiji’s Old Capital!

We’re still buzzing from an incredible few days at our ISS Year 9 Applied Learning Camp in the captivating town of Levuka, Ovalau! The adventure began bright and early on Tuesday morning as we set sail from Natovi Jetty, the anticipation thick in the air. While the sea decided to give us a bit of a bumpy welcome upon arrival in Levuka, the weather held to its promise, greeting us with that familiar, warm Fijian embrace.
As soon as we landed on Levuka’s shores, it was straight into camp life! Our awesome Year 9 students quickly embraced their assigned group duties, tackling chores with enthusiasm and teamwork that would make any camp leader proud. These responsibilities were the backbone of our 4-day, 3-night stay, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose.
Wednesday was a day steeped in history! We embarked on a fascinating journey through Fiji’s Old Capital, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walking the very streets where Fiji’s story unfolded was truly special. The kids were captivated by the well-preserved colonial architecture and the tales of a bygone era. Exploring the historical landmarks and soaking in the unique atmosphere of Levuka was a fantastic learning experience that brought their individual and societal lessons to life! It’s safe to say the old capital won their hearts!
Thursday was all about giving back and getting our hands dirty – in the best way possible! Our students rolled up their sleeves for a heartwarming community service project: cleaning and painting a Year 4 classroom. It was inspiring to see everyone work together, putting in effort, and brightening the learning environment for younger students. The smiles on their faces as they saw the transformation were priceless – they truly enjoyed making a positive impact on the Levuka community.
But the fun didn’t stop there! Thursday evening held a special surprise. Our amazing students secretly organized a fantastic birthday party for our beloved Mrs. Koroi! The look on her face when she was surprised was pure joy, and the atmosphere was filled with laughter, singing, and heartfelt well wishes. It was a beautiful testament to the thoughtfulness and camaraderie within our Year 9 group.
Overall, the Applied Learning Camp in Levuka was an absolute blast! From navigating the slightly choppy seas to delving into Fiji’s rich history, contributing to the community, and celebrating together, it was an experience filled with learning, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Then, just as quickly as it began, our Levuka adventure drew to a close. On Friday morning, filled with stories to tell and a newfound appreciation for this charming historical town, we set sail once more, this time heading back to Suva.
