We had the pleasure of taking the Year 10 students on a three-day camp at St. Vincent College, located in Natovi, Tailevu. The camp took place from Tuesday, May 7th, to Friday, May 10th, during Week 5 of Term 2. St. Vincent College, which is approximately 80 kilometers from Suva and accessible via Kings Road, provided a picturesque setting overlooking the Natovi Jetty, a central point for boat transfers to Levuka, Vanua Levu, and inter-island ferries.
The camp offered students numerous opportunities to develop essential life skills, particularly through team bonding activities that fostered both collaboration and leadership. These activities not only helped students build strong relationships with their peers but also allowed them to hone their leadership skills in a supportive environment.
One of the highlights of the camp was a visit to Nukulevu Island. Students embarked on a 15-minute boat ride from the Natovi landing to the island. The day trip featured gathering mangrove propagules and planting seedlings, which helped students gain a deeper understanding of environmental sustainability. The students also had the chance to prepare a traditional ‘lovo’ (earth oven) lunch, followed by team-building activities, sports, and recreation before returning to Natovi landing.
In addition to these activities, the students engaged in significant community work. The Year 10 students demonstrated their commitment to service by water blasting and painting the toilet and shower block on the school grounds. They also water blasted the walls of the school building, contributing to the maintenance and improvement of the school facilities.
The camp was a valuable experience for all involved, allowing the students to develop practical skills, leadership qualities, and a sense of community service. It was a rewarding opportunity for the students to contribute meaningfully to their environment and community while building strong bonds with their peers.
