The Year 6 Applied Learning Camp at Coral Coast Christian Camp was an enriching and transformative experience that combined environmental exploration with personal growth. This much-anticipated event brought students out of the classroom and into the dynamic landscapes of Fiji’s coastal habitats, integrating their interdisciplinary unit (IDU) on Habitat Preservation with hands-on learning. The camp not only deepened students’ understanding of ecosystems but also fostered cooperation, communication, and resilience.
Coastal Connections: Understanding Diverse Habitats
The camp’s highlight was the exploration of three diverse coastal habitats: mangrove forests, coral reefs, and intertidal zones. Each setting provided a unique window into the intricacies of nature and emphasized the importance of conservation.
In the mangrove forests, students marveled at the adaptive features of mangrove trees, particularly their aerial roots designed for survival in brackish water. They observed a vibrant array of wildlife, including mudskippers and fiddler crabs, and learned how mangroves act as critical buffers against coastal erosion and storm surges.
Snorkeling in the coral reefs revealed the underwater “rainforests of the sea.” Students discovered the fascinating interdependence of biotic and abiotic factors, which is responsible for the reefs’ dazzling colors. They also engaged in discussions about the fragility of these ecosystems, with climate change and human activity posing significant threats.
The exploration extended to the intertidal zone, where students ventured into tide pools teeming with life. They observed many living organisms interacting with the ever-changing environment, reflecting on the adaptability of organisms thriving in a habitat that constantly shifts between land and sea.
Skills for Growth and Beyond
Beyond the environmental focus, the camp served as a platform for skill-building. Activities such as team challenges, group reflections, and shared responsibilities honed students’ cooperation and communication abilities. Whether setting up their spaces in the dorms, organising their meals, or navigating the various habitats, students demonstrated resilience and a growing sense of independence.
This camp was more than an academic extension; it was a celebration of learning, exploration, and character development. By immersing themselves in nature and working collaboratively, Year 6 students gained not only a deeper appreciation for the environment but also invaluable life skills to carry forward.
