November 28, 2024Reef to Ridge Experience: A Journey of Exploration and Adventure
The Reef to Ridge experience is not just a school outing but a comprehensive educational journey designed to immerse students in the diverse landscapes and ecosystems of our region. From coastal exploration to inland adventures, this program integrates elements of environmental science, physical education, and cultural appreciation through hands-on activities and direct engagement with natural surroundings. Our Reef to Ridge experience took place over three enriching days from 24th to 26th May 2024. Blah
Students participating in the Reef to Ridge experience were required to adhere to the essential agreements established in class. They were instructed to prepare adequately by bringing essential items such as camping gear, appropriate clothing (including swimwear and reef shoes), a container of baked goods to share with fellow campers, utensils, toiletries, bath and swim towels, bedding for comfort, and a stationery pack for donation to Lomary Primary School.
The journey began with a briefing and orientation upon our arrival at Lomary, setting the stage for the days ahead. After a satisfying lunch, students embarked on a scenic hike overlooking the Nananu i Ra peninsula, offering breathtaking views of the coastline and surrounding terrain. A standout experience was our full-day adventure of river tubing along the Navua River, where students not only navigated the gentle currents in a boat ride but also enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the Navua River Tubing team. The tubing down the river was the icing on the cake
Upon returning to our base, students had the opportunity to unwind and engage in various recreational activities. Some opted for card games and touch rugby, while others explored the cliffs surrounding our campsite. The evening provided a chance for reflection with discussions centered on the day’s adventures and the natural beauty that surrounded us.
The following morning commenced with a hearty breakfast, followed by a concerted effort from all participants to clean and tidy our campsite. This responsibility instilled a sense of stewardship and environmental consciousness among the students. Packing up our belongings, including the stationery packs destined for Lomary Primary School, marked the conclusion of our stay. The act of donating stationery not only fulfilled a practical need for the school but also fostered empathy and a sense of global citizenship among our students.
As one student eloquently put it, “River tubing and hiking were incredible experiences, but the best part was spending an extended day with the senior students of Lomary Primary.”
The success of the Reef to Ridge experience would not have been possible without the dedication and support of several individuals. On behalf of Mr. Ben and Ms. Patricia, special thanks go to Ms. Nimisha, Ms. Seini, Ms. Caireen, and Ms. Noorrinah for their tireless efforts in organizing and overseeing every aspect of the camp. Their commitment to enriching the educational experiences of our students is truly commendable. Gratitude also extends to Aunty Tima for the delicious meals each day, and Mr. Vikash, and Mr. Olive for their invaluable contributions, ensuring the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all participants throughout the journey.
In conclusion, the Reef to Ridge experience stands as a testament to the power of experiential learning in shaping well-rounded and conscientious individuals. It not only broadened our students’ understanding of environmental conservation and cultural diversity but also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards the communities they engaged with. As we reflect on the memories created and lessons learned, we also look forward to building upon this foundation and continuing to inspire future generations through similar transformative experiences.
